READING AND WRITING DISORDER
The problems of such nature almost always occur simultaneously and are always considered to be developmental. They become evident when a child starts going to school. A speech therapist may detect the possibility of having such problems in school before the process of the child’s literacy has actually taken place (on account of grapho-mobility development/underdevelopment and the conveyed predictive disgraphy test).
The child learns all the letters in school, says the therapist, but fails to connect them into words and to write down the pronounced word, but writes the letters in the way he/she heard them or thought appropriate.
Reading and writing are thought of as the highest and the most complex functions of development. The centres for reading and writing are situated in the cerebral cortex and need the longest amount of time to mature.
Do not blame the child, thinking him/her to be just obstinate when refusing to read or write, do not punish him/her physically/verbally – realise that your child cannot do it, and in order not to reach a dead-end consult a speech therapist for professional help. Do not hesitate because the problem can just get more serious. Get in touch with the therapist as soon as you notice your child cannot read or write a word. A speech therapist will help the child so as not to lose time and keeping up with normal school programme.
Do not try to teach the child to read by forcing him/her to name letter by letter, then trying to comprehend the whole word because that will never do. A speech therapist uses an analytical-synthetic method in treating these disorders. The results are quickly improved, and the treatments end with an overwhelming joy of both the parents and the child. The children are freed from the tension and the fear they had had before. The eagerness for reading and writing as well as for learning appears. The child is contented and self-esteemed. The parents as well as the teachers in school no longer scold or punish, but praise him/her, bringing forth even more enthusiasm for the child’s work.
